The Propaganda Artist's Studio

2007, two photographs, 60 x 90 cm

The Propaganda Artis's Studio 1
The Propaganda Artist's Studio 2

The photographs show the street view and interior view of the studio of Wei Li-Chih, a former soldier in Chaing Kai-Shek’s army. Later he became a sculptor and teacher at the Military Academy in Taipei. During his lifetime he sculpted hundreds of statues of Taiwan’s first president, Generalissimo Chaing Kai-Shek, and some of his son, Chiang Ching-Kuo, the sixth president of Taiwan. Recently many of these sculptures have been removed from public space a result of the re-evaluation of Chiang Kai-Shek’s legacy. The photographs show the studio in an ambiguous state, in between a place of creation and a place of storage of memory.
